Optimise blog posts for SEO

5 Steps to Optimise Your Blog for SEO

Starting a new blog? If you’re not sure where to start with SEO, we’ve got you covered.

Get your blog to rank well on Google with our five easy steps.

1. Carry out keyword research

Don’t go in blind when you’re writing your blog posts. First thing’s first: Do your keyword research. Think about keywords and phrases that your customers may be using to search for your products and services at multiple stages in the purchase process.

2. Fix up URLs

You know the ones. If your blog is populated with long, messy URLs full of random letters, numbers and characters, you need to fix these up pronto. These kinds of URLs make it harder for Google to index your website. Instead, use concise URLs that describe the blog content succinctly.

3. Optimise title tags and meta descriptions

Title tags and meta descriptions are key elements in determining how your website will appear on Google. When these aren’t optimised, your website isn’t likely to rank for your desired keywords, and the link to your website may appear messy and irrelevant in the search results page. Keep your eye out for an SEO plugin for your website’s CMS.

4. Google Search Console

Previously known as Google Webmaster Tools, this free service available from Google helps you gain a behind-the-scenes view of your website from Google’s perspective. It contains a variety of tools and resources that help with your presence in search engine results. New linking between AdWords and Search Console enables you to view SEM and SEO results on the one screen.

5. Make your website mobile-responsive

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard, Google has an algorithm that favours mobile-friendly sites over sites that aren’t mobile-responsive. That means sites optimised for mobile will rank better on Google. The reason why? Everyone and their dog uses smartphones to access the Internet these days – so Google might as well make it easier for everyone! Start by making sure your CSS and website theme are mobile-responsive.
