What’s Trending – July 2017

In July, Australians on Google were interested in the entertainment world, smartphone apps and sport.

CHESTER BENNINGTON

Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington sadly passed away on 20 July, leaving Australian music fans devastated and turning to Google to find out more information. The singer was good friends with Chris Cornell, who also passed away recently. Searches peaked on 21 July as the news was just announced, and the topic resonated with Googlers all over Australia. Some of the related queries included ‘Chester Bennington death’, ‘Linkin Park’ and ‘Chester Bennington Chris Cornell.’

SARAHAH

Sarahah – a word meaning ‘frankness’ or ‘honesty’ in Arabic – is a new mobile app that has taken Australian teenagers by storm. The idea of the app is that it acts as a ‘secret messaging’ service where you can anonymously tell your friends your opinions of them. The app is linked with Snapchat, and subsequently ‘Sarahah Snapchat’, ‘Sarahah on Snapchat’ and ‘how to link Sarahah to Snapchat’ were some of the top related search terms. Searches for Sarahah were most popular in Tasmania, followed by South Australia and Queensland.

WIMBLEDON

Australians kept up-to-date with everything Wimbledon this year by searching Google for live updates on the tennis tournament. Roger Federer was the Men’s Singles champion, while Garbine Muguruza took out the Women’s Singles. The final match was held on 16 July, which is also when Google searches peaked. Western Australians were the most interested in the sport, with ‘Wimbledon results’, ‘Wimbledon live’ and ‘Federer Wimbledon’ the top related queries.

DUNKIRK

Director Christopher Nolan’s latest film offering, Dunkirk, made Google’s list of top trends for July with searches peaking on opening weekend. Googlers wanted to know where and when they could see the film, with ‘Dunkirk Hoyts’ and ‘IMAX Dunkirk’ being among the most searched related queries, along with fans of Harry Styles looking to get a peek of the popular singer/actor in the film with ‘Dunkirk Harry Styles’ and ‘Dunkirk cast’. Melbournians were the most interested in seeing the film, followed by those in Canberra, Adelaide and Newcastle.

JODIE WHITTAKER

Jodie Whittaker’s entrance into the Doctor Who world as the titular character caused quite a stir online, particularly in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. Googlers wanted to know all about the new lead, and read up on the backlash to her casting (many Doctor Who viewers seemed to prefer a male in the role). Related queries included ‘Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who’, ‘The Sun Jodie Whittaker’ and ‘new Doctor Who’.
