What’s Trending – May 2016

Much like this time last year, increasingly cold weather had Australians headed for the living room to watch television and play video games.

EUROVISION

Eurovision is always a hot contender for Google searches in May – it has made an appearance in the list every year since 2012. After Australia made its debut at Eurovision last year with Guy Sebastian, this year, our very own Dami Im went one better and nabbed 2nd place in the competition. Searches peaked on the date of the finale, 14 May, with those in the ACT and Tasmania displaying the most regional interest. Popular related search queries included ‘winner Eurovision 2016′, ‘Dami Im Eurovision‘ and ‘Eurovision 2016 finalists.’

MOTHER'S DAY

Users on Facebook, particularly women, shared the Mother’s Day love in May to make it the highest-trending topic for the month – unlike Google searchers, who got in early in April to search for gifts and ideas.

MASTERCHEF

Enduring reality TV darling Masterchef has a nation hooked, if Google statistics are anything to go by. With fairly consistent search volume over the course of the month (generally only dipping on Fridays and Saturdays, when the show doesn’t air), fans of the show searched Google for catch-up episodes, recipes and contestants on the show.

TV WEEK LOGIE AWARDS

Women of all ages on Facebook were interested in the celebrities at the 2016 Logie Awards. Held on 8 May in Melbourne, social media fans talked about who wore what, award winners and speeches on the night. Waleed Aly of The Project won the Gold Logie for Best Personality on Australian Television, which set tongues wagging on Facebook.

OVERWATCH

A new video game on Playstation, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, Overwatch became a fiercely popular topic on Google in May with hype leading up to the official release date on 24 May. Prior to the big day, video game aficionados were interested in the price, reviews and the Australian release date. Big fans of the game also scoured the web for specific characters ‘Genji’ and ‘Mei’, with the biggest searchers in Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

POLITICS

Politcs was a hot topic in Facebook in May as we edged closer and closer to the 2016 Federal election in July. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton caused nationwide controversy with his comments on refugees, while Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s stance on the Australian dairy industry drew attention from older men and women on Facebook.

THE VOICE

Premiering on 1 May, the fifth season of The Voice made waves on Google particularly with viewers in the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane. Fans of the reality show took to Google to catch up on episodes they had missed, as well as find more out about specific contestants Adam Ladell and the Koi Boys. Interest over time showed a fairly consistent pattern, with the search term peaking on Sundays and Mondays, and dipping throughout the week.

GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK: STATE OF ORIGIN

The ever-popular sporting event signifying the clash between New South Wales and Queensland saw a rise in popularity on both Google and Facebook towards the end of the month, as Game 1 on the first day of June came closer and closer. This year, sporting enthusiasts from the Northern Territory showed regional interest on par with that of New South Wales and Queensland – last year, other states showed little interest.
