Hot Searches – February 2014

Hot searches for February 2014 were quite different from previous years, with Valentine’s Day missing out on a spot in the top five rising searches. A year on from Hot Searches – February 2013 saw a greater focus on people, with the news of Charlotte Dawson’s death and Schapelle Corby’s release on parole. Television series were still popular search terms, with INXS and Schapelle also taking top spots in rising searches.

Charlotte Dawson

Charlotte Dawson was the top rising search for February 2014, and on the 22nd, search results peaked when she was reported dead. Dawson battled Twitter trolls for a number of years, and her Twitter account was among the top related searches. Australians were frantically googling for more Charlotte Dawson news after suggestions of suicide began to surface. Her Instagram and ex-husband Scott Miller also saw search rises in February.

Flappy Bird

The second highest rising search for February was the addictive mobile game, Flappy Bird. The craze started with search terms like ‘download Flappy Bird’ and ‘play Flappy Bird’, however Australians were quickly frustrated and began searching for ‘Flappy Bird cheats’ and ‘hacks’ to improve their ‘score’ (which was also a rising search term). Related searches for ‘Flappy Bird online’ soared after the game was removed from Apple’s App Store and Google Play. ‘Why Flappy Bird’ and ‘Flappy Bird creator’ also became top related searches.

2014 Sochi Winter Olympics

Another top rising search term for February was the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. ‘Sochi 2014’ and ‘Sochi’ became interchangeable search terms with ‘Winter Olympics’ and ‘2014 Olympics’. ‘Ice hockey’ and ‘Winter Olympics hockey’ were among the top related searches for Australia, as well as variations of ‘medal tally’ searches.

Schapelle Corby

On February 10th Schapelle Corby was released on parole, making her one of the top rising searches for February 2014. Parole, released, news, latest and Facebook when paired with Schapelle Corby were among the top related searches as well as her sister, Mercedes Corby. Adding to the search frenzy was the airing of telemovie Schapelle on Februay 9th, with ‘Schapelle Corby movie’ being the top related search term.

INXS

Television was on our minds once again in February, with another mini-series taking out a spot in the top rising searches. This time it was for Network Seven TV series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, which aired on February 9th. The series boosted searches for ‘channel 7’ with Australians wanting to know more about the ‘cast’ and original band ‘members’, in particular, lead singer ‘Michael Hutchence’ and their sixth album, ‘Kick’.
