Hot Searches – April 2015

The hot searches for last month, similar to Hot Searches – April 2014, saw Aussies seek out seasonal topics, like Anzac Day and the AFL. As the April days got cooler, it seems we also appropriately gained an interest in what was happening in the world of movies and television.

ANZAC DAY

A perpetual April favourite for search terms, Anzac Day was the top rising search term for April. This year was particularly special: 2015 marked the 100th anniversary of Anzac landings at Gallipoli. Australians sought to commemorate the day with related search terms like ‘Anzac dawn service’ and ‘Anzac Day service’ demonstrating eagerness to pay tribute to Australian and New Zealand troops. ‘Woolworths Anzac Day’ was also a rising related search term, as many Australians felt that the supermarket giant trivialised a very sensitive issue with their Anzac ad campaign.

FAST AND FURIOUS

The involvement of the deceased Paul Walker, a fan-favourite of this seemingly never-ending franchise, saw awareness of this particular instalment soar. Related search terms like ‘Paul Walker brother’ and ‘See You Again’ detail the evident interest and sorrow from fans: Walker’s brothers were used as body doubles in the film, and See You Again is a song that pays tribute to the late actor. Searches for Fast and Furious reached a peak on 4 April – two days after it’s official release in Australian cinemas. Hoyts appears to be the Australia’s cinema of choice for viewing blockbusters: it appeared alongside searches for Fast and Furious and The Avengers.

AFL

AFL enthusiasts seeking out footy scores did so frequently throughout April, with searches consistently peaking on weekends – particularly on Saturdays – and dropping on weekdays. Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and West Australia are the biggest AFL fans.

GAME OF THRONES

Now in it’s fifth season, the hype for HBO’s Game of Thrones isn’t slowing down anytime soon. It seems fans of the show couldn’t wait one more day to view their favourite show last month: with the first episode scheduled for release on 12 April, the first four episodes were leaked to file-sharing sites on 11 April. In Australia, the popularity of this search term was seen in almost all areas of the country, bar Northern Territory. Evidently, it also appears that pirates abound in our great southern land: the search term was oft accompanied with searches for torrent sites.

THE BLOCK

Rounding out this month’s rising search terms was season ten of the popular reality television series The Block. This search term was popular almost all over Australia and reached a peak on the date of the finale, 29 April. Fans of the show were keen to see the results of the finale, with related search terms like ‘The Block auction’ and ‘The Block results’ also popular. Arguably the most controversial contestants, Tim and Anastasia, also caught the attention of Australians on Google as one of the most-searched related terms.
