Hot Searches - June 2015

Hot Searches – June 2015

Hot Searches last month was host to a varied mix of pop culture, gaming and Australians wondering if Father’s Day was really in June instead of September. Dissimilar to Hot Searches – June 2014, we took our minds off of sport this year and were mostly more concerned about what was happening on the other side of the hemisphere.

CAITLYN JENNER

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce, came out as transgender earlier in 2015. In June this year, Vanity Fair launched a cover story photographed by Annie Leibovitz featuring Jenner, signifying her name change. Jenner is the first openly transgender woman to be featured on the cover of Vanity Fair. The search term was popular amongst Australian Googlers the country over, with New South Wales taking the cake for sheer number of searches.

RUBY ROSE

Australian pop culture icon Ruby Rose gained our nationwide attention soon after the premiere of season 3 of Orange Is the New Black on 11 June. On 18 June, our interest in this Aussie gal making it in one of Hollywood’s favourite shows was at an all-time high. Most popular in South Australia, related rising search terms include ‘Ruby Rose OITNB’ and ‘OINTB’.

FATHER'S DAY

Americans posting sweet social media tributes to their father on America’s Father’s Day (21 June) had Aussies in a flurry on Google, desperately asking if they had forgotten this special day. (Note for the diary: Australia celebrates Father’s Day on 6 September this year). The search for answers peaked on 21 June, when many-an-Aussie could be found Googling related search terms like ‘Father’s Day date’ and ‘Father’s Day Australia’. Onya Australia.

AGARIO

A simple concept with a big following, Australia’s fourth most-searched term for June was a MMOG (“massively multiplayer online game”) called Agario where players “eat” smaller cells to become the biggest cell. Australia’s addiction to Agario was steady over the course of the month, with Victorians being the biggest searchers.

E3

It seems our gaming Googlers got to it last month, as E3 2015 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) was held in LA on 16-18 June. Aussies were fascinated with gaming publisher Bethesda’s announcement of the highly-anticipated Fallout 4: related rising search terms include ‘Bethesda’, ‘Bethesda E3’ and ‘Fallout 4’.
