Hot Searches – March 2015

Like Hot Searches – March 2014 and preceding years, some of the most popular rising search terms for last month involved sports events, the hibernation of daylight savings and – of course – Easter. The arrival of Netflix on Australian shores also got Aussies excited.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS 2015

As appears to be the norm for March, Daylight Savings was at the forefront of Australian’s minds later in the month. Victorians were the most concerned as to when their clocks would wind back, with Queenslanders, Western Australia and Northern Territory residents predictably the least worried. The clocks turned back an hour at 3am on Sunday 5th April, allowing early birds in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT to catch some more light every morning – and an extra hour of sleep too.

NETFLIX AUSTRALIA

The launch of Netflix in Australia on 31st March proved to be a strong contender in rising search terms, evidently looking to knock out Stan and Presto early in the piece as the most popular streaming service in Australia. Internet users were concerned with the catalogue and price of the new video-on-demand service, with related search terms like ‘Netflix Australia content’ and ‘Netflix Australia price’ popping up frequently.

NRL

As the NRL began on the 5th of March, so too did it’s quick rise to popularity on Google throughout March. Peaking on weekends to coincide with the games, related search terms like ‘NRL scores’, ‘NRL tips’ saw fans searching for quick live updates of their favourite sport. Unsurprisingly, New South Wales and Queensland are the homes of the biggest footy enthusiasts.

F1

The 2015 Australian Grand Prix, held on 15th March in Melbourne, gained serious traction in Australia’s Google search terms early in the month. Search traffic peaked on the day of the race and was most prevalent amongst Melbournians. Searches for f1 picked up again around the 29th of March, the date of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

EASTER 2015

Similar to last year, Aussies on the hunt for Easter activities prior to the big day in April turned to Google to see what was on. Easter-related searches were fairly consistent throughout the whole month throughout the entirety of the country, bar Northern Territory and Tasmania. The similar search term ‘Easter show 2015’ ensured Sydney’s Royal Easter Show stayed in the related-search terms limelight for another year. Another strong contender was ‘Easter 2015 date’, displaying just how much Aussies like to plan their Easter long weekends.
