Hot Searches – May 2015

It seems Aussies couldn’t get enough of their television and theatre screens in May. As the cooler months well and truly arrived, it’s no surprise our Google activity remained in line with our viewing habits as we snuggled up. All five search terms relate to television, and we can see that our habits were similar this time last year – in Hot Searches – May 2014, Eurovision and State of Origin made the list, too.

EUROVISION

Eurovision is the undefeated champion of May’s Hot Searches. The competition this year was of particular interest to Australians, as our own Guy Sebastian was the unprecedented wildcard of the annual song contest. Common related rising searches included ‘Eurovision final’, ‘Eurovision results’, ‘Guy Sebastian Eurovision’ and Guy Sebastian didn’t disappoint, managing to nab 5th place from a competition of 27 countries.

STATE OF ORIGIN

The clash of the Blues and the Maroons is always a high contender around this time of year, predominantly gaining strength from Google searches in New South Wales and Queensland, with other states understandably lagging behind. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

The new instalment of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action film franchise was the talk of the country in May, and Aussies were frantically rushing out to see the film in cinemas and seeking out reviews – the top related rising searches include ‘Hoyts’, ‘Hoyts Mad Max’ and ‘IMDB Mad Max’. Released on 14 May, the search term gained traction on and after this date almost all around Australia.

MASTERCHEF

Perennial favourite Masterchef continued to capture the hearts of a nation obsessed with reality TV, steadily remaining a popular search term throughout the month. The show began in May, so its no surprise viewers hopped online to reacquaint themselves with the contestants – some breakout rising terms include ‘Masterchef 2015 contestants’ and ‘Masterchef contestants’.

IVAN MILAT

Australia became engrossed with Catching Milat in May, a mini-series circling the events surrounding the events leading up to serial-killer Ivan Milat’s arrest and conviction. The searches reached a peak on May 17 and 24, the nights on which the show aired.
