Hot Searches – September 2014

While only one topic remained consistent across the Hot Searches in September 2013 and September 2014 (that being, the newly released iPhone), there were some similarities, with television and video games making the list both years. Last year, Australians were hooked on Breaking Bad and Grand Theft Auto 5, whereas this year it was Big Brother and Destiny the Game.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

Jennifer Lawrence was the top search term for September after leaked images began circulating online. ‘The Fappening’ or ‘Celebgate’ was a result of numerous iCloud accounts being hacked. On August 31, around 200 stolen images of Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Kate Upton and several other celebrities were posted online. Originally, these pictures were posted to image board website 4chan, but soon enough they were all over the internet, spreading through social media and sites like Reddit and Tumblr.

BIG BROTHER 2014

The 2014 season of Big Brother first aired on Monday 8 September on channel 9. Throughout the month searches peaked early in the week, due to the live shows, evictions and nominations being aired. Australians went online to check the TV guide and find out what time the reality show aired, as well as watch catch-up episodes of the television series. Skye and Aisha were the only two housemates to appear in the top related search results, perhaps due to their romantic entanglements with other housemates.

DESTINY THE GAME

September 9 saw the release of popular online video game Destiny on consoles such as Playstation 3, PS4, Xbox and Xbox One. Developed by Bungie, the first-person shooter game, Destiny, ranked high in the Hot Searches throughout the month. Gamers searched online for IGN cheats, wikis and reviews on terms such as warlock, vanguard, light, farming and weapons.

APPLE IPHONE 6

Searches for the iPhone 6 peaked on September 10 after its release was announced in an Apple press event in Cupertino, California on September 9. A subsequent rise in searches occurred when the iPhone 6 was released, which followed just days later on September 19. Australians were eager to trade in their 5S for an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, searching for the two models, as well as network providers like Optus, Telstra and Vodafone. Despite the $869 price tag, one of the lower related search terms was price.

EBAY AUSTRALIA

On September 14, eBay Australia celebrated their 15th birthday and thanked their users with 15% off everything for 48 hours. Australians rushed online to take advantage of this offer, searching for my eBay, PayPal and the eBay Australia Login. Searches for eBay remained consistent after the promotion, and not surprisingly, peaks occurred on weekends. Tasmanians were significantly more interested in this search term than any other state. eBay should watch its back though – competitor Gumtree was also among the top related search terms.
