Looking great on Instagram

Looking great on Instagram

These tips will have you taking awesome Instagram shots in no time.

Get some perspective

Taking photos with your iPhone doesn’t give you the same depth of field or perspective as an SLR camera does. Using the Tilt Shift feature you can give the appearance of a short depth of field, that great effect when the object in the foreground is in focus and the background blurs slightly. Try it!

See the light

Look for great lighting to ensure the best photos. Natural light can create a soft effect on people and products so use this whenever you can. If you have a great image that is underexposed, e.g. too dark for your purposes, try the Lux feature to brighten it up. It’s like an auto contrast feature that makes muddy images come alive.

Think inside the square

With Instagram, you really have to think inside the square. If you have taken images that are rectangular, all is not lost. Choose your image and tap Edit then choose Square from the dimension option and voila, you will see a grid of 3×3 squares that you can use to frame your image into shape.

See another side

Now’s not the time to think straight. The best approach to liven up boring images is to change the angle of your shot. Try shooting from above or from the side to get a different view of your subject. It might be all you need to change the image from boring to beautiful.

Create your own filter

Instagrammers can tell their Hefe from their Valencia, so make your image stand out with a custom filter. Try manually adjusting the shadows, highlights and warmth (just some of Instagram’s new editing tools). Plus, there’s now a vignette option that is great for blurring out not-so-great aspects of your shot.

Want more?

Try photo-editing apps like Afterlight. This app offers the same tools as Instagram and more. Afterlight has their own range of filters, plus fun tools like frames and double exposure. The tools are more technical, with options to adjust the highlight and shadow tones by colour, making it a great app for those who have mastered the Instagram editing tools.
