A massive 94% of the Australian population are going on the internet, with 79% logging on every day according to the AIMIA/Sensis.

Search is still the main activity that Australians are doing online at 89.9% with social media not far behind at 81%, with most users making more than 4 searches at a time (comScore).

Social Media

The growth in social media has played a major part in Internet activity with purchasing decisions being influenced by friends and peers online. 38% of Australians regularly use social media to interact with businesses (Nielsen), with 36% of users making a purchase after researching via social media (AIMIA/Sensis).

Below are the statistics of consumer buyer behaviour being influenced to take action after listening to a video or reading comments via social media online.

Businesses are taking advantage of this opportunity with an increase in social media marketing. On a yearly basis small businesses are investing an average $2,050 a year with larger businesses spending an average $78,750 on their social media marketing activity (AIMIA/Sensis).

Mobile Activity

Use of mobile phones has also increased with devices such iPhone and Android smartphone technology allowing people to search the Internet and access their email, 68% of Australians having read email on their devices (OMP), and social media accounts easily.

Mobile phones being used as smaller Internet devices with 26% of people watching video content via their mobile phone (Neilson) and 65% of Australians having viewed a video clip online in the past month (ADMA). 61% of mobile users search the Internet via their device (iProspect) with 49% making a call to a local business (OMP) and 26% making a purchase via their smartphone (comScore).

Online Consumer Behaviour

73% of online consumers are aged between 35-44 and the most likely age group to make a purchase. The most bought products relate to travel, tickets and accommodation (ACMA).

Convenience is still the main reason for purchasing online although this has decreased in the past year. Economic factors have had an impact on online buyer behaviour with the reasons for shopping online to save money increasing.
