Major world news events recorded large volumes of searches during February, along with some familiar themes from January – natural disasters and sport were a major part of searches conducted on Google and Yahoo!

Here are the top 5 hot searches for February 2011 using data from Google Insights and Yahoo! Buzz.

NZ Earthquake

Huge interest in the natural disaster that hit our Tasman neighbours. Lots of varied searches relating to location, hotline info as well as charities.

Cyclone Yasi

As this vicious cyclone formed and made its way across land in early February, many varied searches were made ranging from those affected to others wanting to find out more.

Egypt

This major political event was a hot topic for searches in February with varied searches relating to location, politics and news articles.

Libya

Similar to the Egypt event many Australians were searching for more information as events unraveled in Libya towards the end of the month.

AFL

As the pre-season competition commenced, the widely loved sport saw many searches relating to teams, players and schedules during the month.
