Hot Searches – January 2013

January 2013 has seen peak searches ranging from Festivals; the weather – bush fire warnings & flooding; and the Tennis – which once again was top of the list with searches for the Australian Open.

Australian Open 2013

Searches for the Australian Open 2013 were high in January with the usual searches for tickets to the tennis, schedules and live matches. Tennis players top of searches included Federer, who made it to the semifinals, and Nadal who pulled out of the Australian Open due to a stomach virus. Novak Djokovic retains the champion title winning the Australian Open in the tennis finals against Andy Murray. Australian Open searches were also the top searched terms last year – see Hot Searches – January 2012,

Weather Warnings

January has seen searches on the CFA (County Fire Authority) to find out information on fire warnings, fire safety for home, fire bans and incidents. Victoria in particular has seen the worst of the fires with Australians searching for CFA incidents around Melbourne, in Victoria and NSW.Towards the end of January the weather radar and weather BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) was also highly searched in QLD and Brisbane as heavy rains and winds led to floods in Brisbane and throughout Queensland & Northern NSW.

Australia Day 2013

Australia Day 2013 this year fell on Saturday 26 with Australians going online to search for public holidays and Australia Day weekend fireworks and events in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Festivals

January search history included the yearly festivals Big Day Out, Soundwave and Future Music Festival, with the later two beginning in late February, early March. The Big Day Out was popular this year with Australians searching in particular for The Killers and the BDO lineup in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast.

Lance Armstrong

Searches peaked in mid January as cyclist, Lance Armstrong admitted to doping whilst competing in the Tour de France. The Lance Armstrong interview with Oprah Winfrey made the news worldwide as people around the world logged on to find out more about the interview with the 7 time winner of Le Tour de France.
