Search History – January 2012

January 2012, the search history focus is on sport, with tennis being the most searched term, a major change from Hot Searches – January 2011 when the devastating Queensland floods were the most searched item

As the New Year Begins the search terms for January are based around events that happen every year including the Australian Open, Australia Day and Big Day Out. Whilst  logic may think that the search terms would be the same, there are new players, an up and coming hero and new bands that will change actual search history.

Australian Open 2012

Bernard Tomic has been a favourite in searches this year along with his girlfriend Donay Meijer who has been popular with photographers. As with last year, searches included live tennis matches, scores, players and results queries. Novak Djokovic went on to win the Australian Open and has been a high search term in the past week.

Chinese New Year

The traditional Chinese Holidays fell on the 23rd January this year and welcomed the year of the Water Dragon. Searches on events and horoscopes were high as well as searching the Chinese Dragon to find out more about what this year means in China’s tradition. Year of the Dragon ends February 9, 2013.

Events

Once again Australians got in the spirit to celebrate Australia Day with searches on celebrations, events and fireworks. As Big Day Out 2012 approached searches on tickets, timetables and lineups were high. The festival began in Auckland on 20th Jan and finishes in Perth on the 5th Feb.

Home and Away

Those who love the popular TV soap “Home and Away” have been gripped by the storyline with many searching “does Charlie die?” The actress Esther Anderson, who plays Charlie, has been written off the channel 7 show after her character dies.

SOPA and PIPA

The SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protection IP Act) legislation is designed to protect Intellectual Property rights online. However, there has been a lot of controversy in Australia around the legislation going too far with many viewing it as an violation of freedom of speech and others saying that it gives a select few power to control what happens on the web. The US bill will be voted on in early Feb.
