Facebook and Google trends - January 2016

What’s Trending – January 2016

In the first month of 2016, Australians voted in Triple J’s Hottest 100, watched lots of sport and mourned the passing of two legendary entertainers. Check out the rest of the Facebook and Google trends for January.

GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK: DAVID BOWIE

Music legend and innovator David Bowie passed away on 10 January, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his last album, Blackstar. Searches peaked the day after his death, as Australians searched Google for confirmation of his passing. A hugely influential figure in the world of music, film and fashion, fans Australia-wide mourned Bowie by giving their condolences on Facebook and searching for his music on YouTube.

GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK: ALAN RICKMAN

Just four days after the news of David Bowie’s passing, it was announced on 14 January that Alan Rickman had also died after a battle with cancer. Australians flocked to Google and Facebook to celebrate the actor by taking a look back at his expansive and diverse career. ‘Alan Rickman movies’ was a popular related breakout term on Google, and Harry Potter fans mourned his passing by searching for Severus Snape, his much-loved character in the films.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Interest in the Australian Open grew by the day over the course of January in the lead up to the finals on 30 January. This Australian Open was particularly notable for Lleyton Hewitt fans as it marked the end of his 20-year professional tennis career, and he was one of the popular rising related search terms on Google, as was winner Novak Djokovic and runner-up Andy Murray.

MUSIC CONCERTS AND FESTIVALS

Facebook users let the good times roll in January in what was a busy month for big summer music events. Field Day festival, Gary Clark Jr.’s Opera House performance and Leon Bridges’ first Australian tour were all popular topics amongst Facebook users.

THE HOTTEST 100/AUSTRALIA DAY

As Australians geared up for the public holiday off on 26 January, so too did their entries into Triple J’s Hottest 100. Voting closed on Friday 22 January, with searches peaking on Thursday 21 January, as voters scrambled to get their top ten tracks of the year into the running for number 1. As Australia Day loomed closer, Googlers also wanted to know about trading hours of major supermarkets, what the weather was going to be like and if there were any fun events on.

SPORT

The Big Bash League and anticipation for the Super Bowl in February were both popular conversation topics on Facebook. The Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” competition, where fans can submit their own advertisements to air during the game, was a particularly popular topic with older women.

THE REVENANT

Hype for Leonardo DiCaprio’s new film The Revenant peaked the weekend of 7 January, and dipped and peaked on the weekdays and weekends thereafter as Aussies flocked to cinemas to view the film. Some Googlers needed a bit more background information before committing to buying a movie ticket – “The Revenant trailer” and “The Revenant review” were popular related rising search terms. Movie lovers in Canberra and the Gold Coast were the top searchers, followed by Melbourne and Adelaide.
