What’s Trending – October 2015

In October, entertainment news was par for the course with the Rugby World Cup, Back to the Future, The Bachelorette and Kardashian gossip all making the What’s Trending list. And like Hot Searches – October 2014, Halloween remained one of the most popular topics of interest.

LAMAR ODOM

For the uninitiated, Lamar Odom is the ex-spouse of one of the Kardashian clan members, as well as a former sports star in his own right. In October, he was number one on Google’s top searches list after rumors of his death started circulating on 13 October when he was found unconscious in a brothel.

South Australians were full speed ahead when it came to finding out the latest goss on the matter, topping the search volume for the whole of Australia. ‘Khloe Kardashian’ became a breakout search term during Lamar’s recovery.

GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK: HALLOWEEN

Halloween in Australia seems to be gaining traction year on year, and 2015 was no exception (well, maybe except amongst some staunch baby boomers). Searches remained steady throughout the month and peaked on the day, as Googlers were busy seeking inspiration for Halloween makeup, costumes and pumpkins. However, not all Aussies embraced the holiday, as ‘what is Halloween’ remained one of the top rising search terms, similar to last year.

Facebook users were also hip to the jive in October as Halloween was the most talked about topic of the month. 18-34-year-old women on Facebook especially embraced the day.

GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK: WALLABIES AND RUGBY WORLD CUP

Not one to miss their time to shine in a What’s Trending article, sports fans ensured the Rugby World Cup made the cut in October as they sought out results of the games every Sunday. Unsurprisingly, search volume hit a peak when the Wallabies and the All Blacks went head to head in the finale on 31 October, with the Wallabies walking away without the glory as world champions New Zealand won 34-17.

Men in the 35-54-age bracket on Facebook were also talking about the Rugby World Cup in the lead-up to the final.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

October saw a significant milestone for Back to the Future fans – the 21st of October 2015 marked the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown travelled to the future in the second film of the trilogy. Fans of the film reminisced about the predictions it had made for the future – some scarily accurate, others way off (hover boards still aren’t a thing, unfortunately). Men on Facebook were particularly excited about the day.

STAR WARS

As marketing ramps up for the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, so too have Google searches relating to the franchise. To keep hype building, a whole lot of Star Wars stuff is being released that has fans nerding out big time. The primary culprit is the Star Wars Battlefront game to be released in November. We don’t want to jump the gun, but Tasmanians appear to be the biggest fans in Australia with the highest search volume, followed by those in Canberra and the Gold Coast.

ENTERTAINMENT

The entertainment category is always a big one amongst Facebook users, and October was no different. Robbie Williams and Fleetwood Mac concerts attracted the attention of older women on Facebook, whereas the revival of classic early 2000’s show Gilmore Girls excited women of all ages.

THE BACHELORETTE

Rounding out this month’s top five Google searches, season 1 of The Bachelorette charmed viewers all the way to Google to seek out more information on the contenders for Sam Frost’s heart. Searches rose on every Thursday in October, and hit a peak to coincide with the finale towards the end of the month. Viewers were most interested in the winner of the show, Sasha Mielczarek, as well as top contender Richie Strahan.
