Hot Searches – February 2013

Top searches for February 2013 were very similar to last year, February 2012 – Hot Searches, with the annual day for romantics, Valentines Day and the popular My Kitchen Rules TV show, again predominant on search history throughout February.

This year top of searches both in Australia and worldwide is the Harlem Shake dance craze, a vast contrast to February 2012 and the shocking news of Whitney Houston’s death.

The Harlem Shake

Labelled the new ‘Gangnam Style’ of 2013, the Harlem Shake has gone viral with searches peaking for YouTube clips, videos and mp3 downloads of the music dance track. Released by a Brooklyn DJ named Baauer back in June 2012, the song has taken off with the original YouTube clip and comedians doing their own versions of the Harlem Shake in more than 70 videos.

My Kitchen Rules & The Block

Channel 7 TV show, My Kitchen Rules 2013 is just as popular as last year with searches on mkr rules, recipes, facebook and the mkr cheating scandal. The most searched contestants this year were the self-named ‘Spice Girls’, Jessie and Biswa. My Kitchen Rules has been popular in TV ratings this year beating rival shows channel ten’s Masterchef and The Block on channel 9. However, The Block All Stars 2013 continues to be popular in online searches for episodes with the block contestants, Amity and Phil & Dan and Dani being the most searched couples.

Days of Celebration - Valentines Day & Chinese New Year

Australians went online to search for Valentines gifts, cards and ideas as well as Funny Valentines, quotes, poems and messages to get inspiration from and wish loved ones a Happy Valentines Day. Chinese New Year fell on the 10 Feb 2013, and celebrated the year of the snake according to the Chinese Zodiac. Searches were high on Chinese horoscopes, Zodiac signs and the meanings behind the Year of the Snake.

Mathletics

With hundreds of schools and homes signing in to use the Mathletics online learning resource, the searches have risen as students go back to school with searches peaking on weekdays. Top searches included cool maths games and the mathletics login or sign-in pages. For younger students the ABC Reading Eggs has also spiked in popularity for reading skills and educational games in the classroom.

NRL/AFL

Whether you are an AFL or NRL fan, February is the month that the rugby begins and Australians start searching for dream teams, fixtures, results and all stars. Searches were particularly popular for the Supercoach AFL and NRL fantasy leagues, the AFL NAB cup, live matches and the NRL 2013 draw.
