Hot Searches – April 2014

The hot searches for April 2014 included the sudden death of celebrity Peaches Geldof, the release of teen sci-fi movie Divergent and search queries about Easter. A few seasonal topics that were popular last year in April 2013 – Hot Searches, such as ANZAC Day and Game of Thrones also scored spots in the top five this year.

PEACHES GELDOF

Peaches Geldof was the top rising search for April in Australia and worldwide. The tragic death of Peaches on April 8th saw searches for the celebrity soar, as the public went online to find out more.

Australians were most concerned with finding out the latest news about Peaches Geldof’s death, as well as her funeral. Her father, Bob Geldof, as well as two of her sisters, Pixie and Tiger Lily, were also of concern to Australians with many related searches containing these family members. Searches for Peaches Geldof’s Instagram account were also popular, after it was discovered that her last post was a picture of herself as a child with her her late mother, Paula Yates.

ANZAC DAY

ANZAC Day was a top rising search for April again this year, with the seasonal event taking second place for a second year in a row. Commemorating the lives of ANZAC soldiers was of most concern to Australian and New Zealand searchers.

With ANZAC Day and Easter falling on consecutive weekends, Australians were concerned with grocery store opening hours. Search terms like trading hours, opening hours, Coles and Woolworths when paired with ANZAC Day dominated the top related searches. ANZAC Day dawn services in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane were also among the top related searches.

DIVERGENT

The teen sci-fi movie was popular during April thanks to the timing of the new release and school holidays. Event Cinemas and Hoyts were also top rising searches, narrowly missing out on spots in the top five.

Rising and related searches included Divergent paired with terms such as movie, trailer, cast, book, watch, online, and megashare. Australians wanted to know more about cast member Theo James, who was the only actor appearing in the top related searches.

Those most interested in Divergent were Gold Coast residents, although overall Australia was quite interested in the movie, coming third behind Philippines and New Zealand.

GAME OF THRONES

Game of Thrones made it into the top five hottest Australian searches in April again this year after being popular during the same month in 2013. The television show was also a top rising search worldwide, with Australia being the second most interested country, behind Iceland.

Searches peaked each Monday with Australians eager to download the latest episode after it was aired on HBO in the States. Related searches were primarly for torrent searches such as megashare, free tv, pirate bay and project free tv. But it wasn’t all bad… Some of us searched for Foxtel. After one particular episode (spoiler alert) GoT aficionados rushed online to find out more about what happened to Joffrey, making this unpopular character, a popular search term.

EASTER

With Easter falling later this year, the popularity of this search term also fell later, taking a top spot in April rather than March in 2014.

Easter was a hot search worldwide but Australia remained the most interested nation. Our related search terms differed greatly to other countries, like the United States, who were more interested in the holiday itself, rather than supermarket trading hours.

Similar to ANZAC Day, related and rising searches mainly consisted of grocery store enquiries, with terms like trading hours, Woolworths and Coles being commonly searched with Easter. Terms such as royal show, 2014, eggs, bunny, Sunday, Monday and Friday were also popular related searches when paired with Easter.
