Hot Searches – June 2014

Australians embraced their inner Socceroo, with the FIFA World Cup dominating Hot Searches – June 2014. The majority of the top rising searches related to the 2014 World Cup in some way, but it was the death of Young Ones star, Rik Mayall that Australians most searched. Last year’s Hot Searches – June 2013 saw sport take a back seat and focused on entertainment.

RIK MAYALL

The top rising search term was for English comedian, actor and writer Rik Mayall after he suddenly passed away on 9 June. Mayall was an icon, known for his work on cult sitcom The Young Ones, and comedy films such as Drop Dead Fred. Australians loved Rik Mayall, and were rather concerned when the news broke online. In terms of searches for Rik Mayall, Australia was ranked third, behind the United Kingdom and Ireland.

FIFA WORLD CUP

The 2014 FIFA World Cup and variations of this phrase took up several Hot Searches in June. Australians were most interested in scores, with ‘World Cup Results’ being the top rising search term related to the FIFA World Cup. Unique to Australia, was the search term ‘Soccer World Cup’ with few other nations searching this term (USA, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand). Other related search terms included World Cup and FIFA combined with 2014, highlights, scores, live, news, results, rankings, groups, opening, SBS, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, England, Germany, Netherlands and Portugal.

SUAREZ

Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, was the only player in the FIFA World Cup who made it as a rising search term in the June Hot Searches. Despite Diego Godín scoring the winning goal in Uruguay’s game against Italy, it was Luis Suarez who peaked in the search results on 25 June, after biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. Top and rising related searches included Suarez combined with terms such as World Cup, FIFA, news, biting, ban, Uruguay and Liverpool. While Suarez was a top rising search term worldwide, Australia wasn’t interested in reliving the moment with a video like other many other countries.

SOCCEROOS

The Socceroos managed to secure a spot in the top five (search terms, that is). Although our interest was up and down, overall this rising search term sustained throughout the month of June. Checking out the opposition, the top related search terms were Chile, Croatia and Netherlands when combined with Socceroos. On 13 and 18 June, search results peaked when we played Chile and Netherlands respectively, but our interest dropped with our ranking when we played defending world champions Spain on 23 June. Key phrases such as World Cup, 2014, Australia, squad, team and game were also popular related search terms.

FRENCH OPEN

With the French Open running from 25 May to 8 June, the tennis tournament still managed to find a spot in the June Hot Searches, amid the FIFA frenzy, as Australians were among some of the most interested in the world. Searches for the French Open were significantly higher on the day of the Men’s Singles Final than they were on when the Women’s Singles Final was played. Results peaked on 8 June, when Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic in the Men’s Singles Final. Top and rising related search terms included French Open paired with 2014, tennis, final, live, Nadal and Djokovic.
