I Pity The Fool

I Pity the Fool

Social media is an excellent vehicle for pranking the world, as this April Fool’s Day activity demonstrated.

The Twitter Helmet

The Twitter Helmet

Social media fans read with interest Twitter’s announcement of a new wearable device, the Twitter Helmet that allows users to “interact with the world around them entirely via a custom aviary interface.’ Imagine being able to post Tweets using a simple pecking motion of the head? The device sounded convincing, featuring ‘a hand-tooled leather case inspired by falconry hoods, feather-shaped Wi-Fi and cellular signal boosters, and a carbon fiber chinstrap with optional wattle-form factor microphone.’ All for only $139.99! Fooled ya!

Trip of a Lifetime. Not.

Trip of a Lifetime. Not.

Travel review and booking portal TripAdvisor had the last laugh on April 1, recommending fictitious travel destinations to its legion of followers. Looking for a fun-filled family vacation this summer, why not check out Amity Island, ‘We were amazed that we had the whole beach to ourselves,’ enthuses one user. For something really different, how about a quick jaunt to the Death Star, which earned a rating of 4 out of 5. ‘”The kids played with the droids for hours. Watch out for the cell-like rooms and the trash compactor smell.” I smell a rat…

Become a Pokemon Master with Google Maps

Become a Pokemon Master with Google Maps‘Dozens of wild Pokémon have taken up residence on streets, amidst forests and atop mountains throughout Google Maps.’ That was the battle cry heard by all Pokemon fans on April 1, 2014. In a statement released by Google Maps, the company announced a partnership ‘with Pokémon and Nintendo to develop a new training tool to help people hone their Pokémon-capturing abilities using Google Maps.’ The game was part of a fake recruiting process to hire a new Pokemon Master. Candidates had just 24 hours to capture 150 escaped Pokemons using the Google Maps app. The best players, the game instructions announced, would
be invited to the Googleplex to participate in a final
hiring round. The game was real, but sadly, the role
of Pokemon Master at Google was not.

LinkedIn Cat Recommendations

LinkedIn Cat Recommendations

Sick of getting recommendations for random ex-colleagues you know (and have lost contact with for a reason?) LinkedIn hears you. On April 1, the team announced a new feature linking cats with other cats. ‘Cats dominate the web, and as one of the largest online social media platforms, we identified a need to connect our members to the feline community, and vice versa, to fulfill a gap in our current product,’ the media release announced. The new feature all set to link cat owners and their cats with other kitties they might know. Read all about fellow felines’ expertise, including bird watching. Increase your network, to, your know, make
cat-nections. Sounds purr-fect.
