Hot Searches – December 2014

This year, three of the top five search terms were the same as those in Hot Searches – December 2014. Predictably, Christmas, Boxing Day Sales and Cricket made the list again this year, while unforeseeable events such as the Sydney Siege and wild weather took out the remaining top search spots.

SYDNEY SIEGE

The Sydney Siege was the top rising search term for the month of December, after customers and staff at the Lindt Café in Martin Place were taken hostage for 17 hours. Australians followed the tense events online, searching for live news and updates. ABC News was also a top rising search term, with the national broadcaster being a trusted resource for news during the Sydney Siege.

CHRISTMAS

Once again, both Christmas and Santa made the top searches list for December. Australians searched for Christmas trees, lights and decorations, as well as ideas for Christmas day recipes, such as ham. Other related search terms included carols, songs and cards as well as trading hours for Coles and Woolworths over the Christmas holidays. Maybe we were a little unprepared this year? Search results for Christmas peaked on Christmas Eve.

BOM RADAR

Summer storms made the news again, with the BOM radar making the list of Top Rising Searches. Australians searched for the BOM radar throughout the month, with obvious spikes during the worst weather. Queensland was the most interested region, after storms hit regions such as Marburg, Gympie, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

CRICKET

Searches for cricket were popular throughout December, with One Day International (ODI) Series, Test Matches and T20 Big Bash League all taking place. Australians were most interested in finding out how our team was faring against competitors such as India. Popular related searches included live cricket, scores, ABC, radio and the upcoming 2015 Cricket World Cup.

DAVID JONES & MYER

Just like last December, there was an increase in searches for major department stores such as David Jones, Myer and Harvey Norman. Customers planned their Boxing Day Sales strategy, searching for trading hours, catalogs and online sales at a range of stores including the Good Guys, JB Hi Fi, Big W, Kmart, Target, Mimco and EB Games. And it seems a few of us missed out on a visit from Santa, with Fitbit fitness products and watches topping our shopping wish lists.
