Hot Searches - May 2014

Hot Searches – May 2014

It seems like Australians had square eyes last month, with the majority of hot searches (Eurovision, House Rules and State of Origin) relating to television. With all this TV, the release of the Budget and the Jay-Z/Solange saga, we were so busy we forgot all about our own mother and her special day.

The Hot Searches for May this year were quite different to last year May 2013 – Hot Searches, with Eurovision being the only search term to reappear in the top five rising search terms.

EUROVISION 2014

Once again, Eurovision took out the top spot in the May Hot Searches. The top related search term was for Conchita Wurst after she was declared the winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. Australians were fascinated by Wurst, with several related searches linked to the winner, as well as YouTube videos of her performance and the television channel, SBS. Conchita Wurst was also the top rising search term worldwide for the month of May.

BUDGET 2014

The release of the 2014 Budget was the second highest rising search term last month. Top and rising related search terms included ‘budget’ paired with 2014, ABC, Australian, cuts, federal, government and news. Canberra was the most interested region, searching significantly more for budget related terms than any other city. Searches peaked on May 13th but we quickly lost interest by the 15th with search results tapering off.

HOUSE RULES

Australian television program, House Rules, returned for its second season and secured third place in the May Hot Searches. Searches for the renovating program, which airs four nights per week, peaked every Tuesday (team introduction episodes). Interestingly, while Tasmania searched for House Rules more than any other state, searches peaked the night Team QLD was introduced. Related search terms included contestants Brooke, Lisa, Adam and Maddi as well as keywords like Channel 7, Australia, 2014, competition, reveal and watch.

STATE OF ORIGIN

Not surprisingly, Queenslanders were the most concerned with State of Origin this year, with Brisbane and Gold Coast residents searching more than any other region. Searches peaked on May 28th when the first game of the series was aired. Top and rising related searches focused mostly on NSW after they defeated Qld in game one. Related searches for NSW origin, NSW team, and NSW 2014 were most the popular, as well as Channel 9, NRL and Ticketek.

JAY-Z

All it took was a 37-second video to be leaked for Jay-Z to become the fifth most searched rising term in Australia. After security camera footage of a fight between Jay-Z and Solange Knowles surfaced online, Australians were madly searching to find out more. The top and rising related search terms included Solange Knowles, Beyonce, fight, attacked and elevator. Sydneysiders searched the most, and the term peaked on May 13, immediately after the footage was uploaded online.
